FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Irish Music Niagara Announces Pause of the Niagara Irish Festival for 2026
Board committed to returning in 2027 for the 180th anniversary of Black ’47, the worst year of the Great Famine.
The Board of Directors of Irish Music Niagara, a volunteer-run, not-for-profit organization dedicated to celebrating and promoting Irish music, culture and heritage across Niagara, today announces the difficult decision to pause the Niagara Irish Festival for 2026.
This decision has not been taken lightly. Over recent months, Irish Music Niagara explored every possible avenue to allow the festival to proceed. For that reason, no announcement was made earlier, as discussions continued with potential partners and funding opportunities. Despite those efforts, the financial and organizational resources required to deliver the festival at the standard expected by our community could not be secured in time.
Rather than compromise the quality of the event—or expose the organization to significant financial risk—the Board has chosen to pause the festival for one year and focus its efforts on returning in 2027 with an even stronger foundation.
A Festival That Has Become Part of Niagara
In just three years, the Niagara Irish Festival has become one of the region’s most recognized celebrations of Irish culture.
Together, our volunteers, performers, sponsors and supporters have:
- ☘ Welcomed more than 10,000 attendees to Niagara Falls.
- ☘ Presented more than 500 performances by musicians, dancers, storytellers, artists and cultural groups.
- ☘ Contributed thousands of volunteer hours to make the festival possible.
- ☘ Created valuable opportunities for emerging local performers.
- ☘ Helped foster the formation of new Niagara-based Irish music groups, including Grass Mud Horse andThe Blackthorns.
- ☘ Showcased Niagara as a welcoming destination for cultural tourism.Beyond the entertainment, the festival has generated meaningful economic activity by encouraging visitors to stay in local hotels, dine in local restaurants, support neighbourhood businesses and experience Niagara’s many attractions.Based on our ticketing records, approximately 40% of ticket purchasers travelled from the Greater Toronto Area, demonstrating the festival’s growing tourism appeal and its ability to attract visitors to Niagara for an experience not currently offered elsewhere in the GTA.According to the 2021 Census, more than 76,000 people across Niagara identify Irish as part of their ethnic or cultural heritage. Irish culture has helped shape the history, identity and character of our region, and the Niagara Irish Festival has become much more than an annual event—it is a celebration of community, heritage and belonging.

More Than Entertainment
Community festivals create benefits that extend far beyond the festival grounds.
They strengthen community identity.
They preserve traditions for future generations.
They provide opportunities for young performers to develop their talents.
They inspire volunteers, create friendships and bring people together.
They encourage visitors to extend their stay while supporting local accommodation providers, restaurants, retailers and tourism attractions.
If Niagara is to continue growing as a world-class tourism destination, community-led cultural festivals must remain an important part of that vision.
Irish Music Niagara believes the success of the Niagara Irish Festival clearly demonstrates the value of investing in community-based cultural tourism. With continued support from businesses, tourism organizations and all levels of government, Niagara has the opportunity to build one of Ontario’s premier celebrations of Irish culture.
Looking Ahead
Despite submitting applications to a number of Canadian funding programmes, Irish Music Niagara was unsuccessful in securing Canadian public grant support for the festival this year. Proceeding without that support would have placed an unacceptable financial burden on our volunteer-run, not-for-profit organization.
While we remain sincerely grateful to every sponsor, donor, volunteer and ticket purchaser who has supported us over the past three years, the Board concluded that pausing the festival was the only responsible decision.
Community festivals are built through volunteers, community partnerships, business sponsorship and public investment. Their long-term success depends on all four working together.
Over the coming year, Irish Music Niagara will actively pursue new partnerships with businesses, tourism organizations and governments while preparing applications for future funding opportunities.
Our objective is clear: to return in 2027 with an even stronger Niagara Irish Festival that reflects the passion, creativity and ambition of our community.
Irish Music Niagara Continues
Although the festival is paused, Irish Music Niagara continues to grow.
Our FREE community music sessions continue every month at Doc Magilligan’s Irish Pub in Niagara Falls and The Irish Harp Pub in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
These sessions have become one of the great success stories of our organization, welcoming musicians and music lovers of every age and ability.
Nothing better reflects the spirit of Irish Music Niagara than our membership itself. Our youngest regular participant is Rosie, aged 5, while our oldest member is Joe, aged 90. From first-time performers to seasoned musicians, Irish music continues to connect generations across Niagara.
Looking Forward
Irish Music Niagara is delighted to announce that we will soon launch a new programme of community events running from this autumn through next summer. The programme will begin with:
| AN IRISH CHRISTMAS THEATRE SHOW IRISH CHRISTMAS CANDLELIGHT CONCERTS |
| Live Irish music, singing and dancing, celebrating the warmth, humour A candlelit celebration of Irish music and seasonal tradition. and traditions of an Irish Christmas. 4 & 5 December | Monastery of Mount Carmel, Niagara Falls 21 November | The Sanctuary, Ridgeway |

Supporting Irish Culture Across Ontario
Irish Music Niagara also extends its congratulations to our friends in London, Ontario, who have secured significant local support to present a free Irish Festival on 18–19 September.
Their success demonstrates what can be achieved when volunteers, businesses and government work together to celebrate Irish culture, and we wish them every success.
Quote
“The year 2027 marks an extraordinary milestone. It will be 180 years since the worst year of the Great Famine—Black ’47—when more than 100,000 Irish men, women and children came to Canada in search of safety, opportunity and a better future. Many eventually made their way to Niagara, where they helped shape our region through their resilience, hard work and contributions to projects such as the Welland Canal.
Irish Music Niagara exists to honour the history, music and heritage of those early immigrants, as well as those—like myself—who have chosen Canada as their home in more recent generations. While the decision to pause the festival has been incredibly disappointing, it is the responsible one. We remain fully committed to preserving and celebrating Irish culture throughout Niagara, and we will spend the coming year building the partnerships and support needed to ensure the Niagara Irish Festival returns in 2027 stronger than ever, worthy of this remarkable anniversary and the legacy of those who came before us.”
Declan O’Sullivan
President, Irish Music Niagara
Thank You
Over the past three years, our volunteer-run, not-for-profit organization has welcomed more than 10,000 attendees, presented more than 500 performances, contributed thousands of volunteer hours, helped establish new Irish music groups, created year-round free community music sessions and built one of Ontario’s fastest-growing celebrations of Irish culture.
That is something worth protecting. That is something worth investing in.
The Niagara Irish Festival has shown what a passionate group of volunteers can achieve. Imagine what could be accomplished with the support of our community, businesses, tourism partners and governments working together.
If you believe Niagara deserves a world-class celebration of Irish culture, we invite you to join us in helping make the 2027 Niagara Irish Festival our strongest yet.
We thank everyone who has been part of this journey and invite our community to continue supporting Irish Music Niagara throughout the year by attending our free music sessions and upcoming events.
Together, we can ensure that the 180th anniversary of Black ’47 is commemorated in a manner worthy of those who came before us and those who continue to build this community.
